I read a beautiful quote about just that today: "The past is a foreign country--they do things different there." I can't remember the source at the moment, though. (Been reading a lot. It tends to jumble together.)

I've been a history geek for years and taking Latin felt like a culmination. (Biblical Hebrew didn't work out so well, though--I always have trouble with languages that use different alphabets.)
