I actually am doing the TV series first and then the books. I did that with Pillars of the Earth and wound up loving the series. It's been my experience that if I read the books first, I hate the movie rendition. I always have an idea of what the film should be like in my head (I essentially create the scenes for film while I am reading -- quirky, and invariably I am disappointed.

The only exception to that rule has been Harry Potter because I accepted them as children's books and was determined to like them.
