The dog knows to stay in his place and not stray in an unseemly manner. It helps that his place is, depending on where Urquhart is and what he is doing: in a nook by the fireplace in Urquhart's room, on the sofa in the bar spread over Urquhart's feet, or on the lawn in the garden, lying in the warm sunlight while Urquhart works.
