Watching 'The Hobbit' on DVD
The shop around the corner had it really cheap and even gave me a free packet of crisps with it because it was some sort of cross-marketing promotion, so the Nazgul and I are now watching 'An Unexpected Journey' with the ability to rewind and slow-mo. And I got an answer to something that I was wondering about since I'd seen it in the cinema!
Arkenstone = Maedhros' Silmaril? Yes!! There is no sign of dead elf when they find it, but: when Smaug comes and Thror tries to take the Arkenstone to safety, he can't properly hold it, and it definitely smokes in his hand and hurts him, which finally causes him to drop it. That is a Silmaril -- nothing evil can hold it because it will burn the evil with the purity of its Valinorean light from the Two Trees (or something). Also, one of the seven dwarf-rings is very noticeable on Thror's hand at that moment. Of course a Silmaril won't coexist with an evil thing like that. At least that is what PJ seems to think. It still doesn't explain why Galadriel hasn't long checked up on the Arkenstone and claimed it. Or rather, why she has checked up on it (which she must have done, she is a very canny Noldorin elf many millennia old!) and not claimed it, or indeed said anything about it.
