woelfle guessed both the interests I ganked from her list right, and now gets the promised drabble: Ben Hur slash, yay!



All the time he'd been away, Messala had dreamt of seeing him again: what it would be like, how he would have changed, what they'd feel, and how they'd celebrate.

Well, not all the time. Many disctractions offered themselves to a young man of Messala's station and background, and he'd gladly taken them all. But there had been times, in between banquets and politics and slave girls, that he had thought of him, again and again, and sometimes, he'd felt vaguely ashamed. Messala imagined his friend looking at the life he now led, and deep inside him, there was the nagging supsicion that he would find it lacking.

Their pranks and exploits had been so much less jaded, and their trysts so much more emotional, satisfying and immediate. Everything meant something.

At first, their reunion had been like everything Messala ever wished for. But then, dark undertones of change and rejection crept in, finalised when a hand creeping casually into the neckline of a tunic had been matter-of-factly captured, and firmly taken away. The brilliant smile that followed made Messala skip with joy, and seethe with a hitherto unknown rage at the same time. We are no longer boys that experiment, but I still like you, the smile seemed to say.

And of course there was a girl. How boring. How predictable.

But this wasn't the end of it all. He was so going to win Judah back.
