Varia - with lotsa linkses!

Several interesting things come together today to make my brain whizz happily:

• There's a lake in southern Bavaria, my TV informs me, which contains purple sulphuric bacteria. Sulphur. Purple. First sensible connetion between possible volcanic activity (sulphur, eh?) and the colour purple. With that, a purple volcanic deity sounds a tiny bit less outrageous.
• In the same vein, I found a lovely naughty faun picture on a nice web site with nekkid blokes that celticangel76 and essayel discovered today. The photographer is called Vance, and essayel is better known to some of you as gil_whimple-mun...
• tahira_saki pointed me to a fascinating book which arrived today and which I am now reading on the side while threading in Morningstar Manor
• Also, 'We Are Pope'? 'You Are Germany'? We are all patriotic again now in a good way? Hah, we are Asterix!! Resisting the evil empire! WalMart is withdrawing from the German market and selling its superstores to the Metro chain of, well, other superstores. Still, that doesn't change the fact that we're the only place worldwide where WalMart has failed! Bwahahahaahaaa!!

Totally - it's utterly fascinating! I loved it right away, from the preface, where he gives his readers a concise precise of his own life so they can see where he's coming from, only to go on to squash the classic nature vs. nurture debate in one single paragraph. Then I went on the skim through the thing back and forth a bit, just to pick up a few basics before reading it all the way through in a linear way, and was fascinated by what came at me - the evolutionary advantages of what he calls ESSP, grandmothers, or timekeeping...

When I read that one brief quote on your journal, I knew right away I had to read it, and I'm not disappointed at all.

Good! I love that book, I think everyone should read it. It's quirky, but it makes sense. And it's an interesting take on ESSP, grandmothers and the whole time/moon thing.

I was so very happy to read yesterday that Wal-Mart is giving in. I only wish they had lost a bit more than the $1 billion that the paper indicated. Sigh... one can only hope that one day people have enough sense not to give those fools their money.

Well, my folks are actually worried that there will be less of a choice if Metro takes over the German WalMart stores which used to belong to another chain named Wertkauf, which went bust and sold out to WalMart. othing is going to bring us Wertkauf back, of course... *sigh*

But having beaten WalMart is good news in any case!
