Thanks to this post in ways_back_room, I discovered the TV Tropes Wiki, which despite its narrowing name is a lovely compendium of standard storytelling devices.

Update from woelfle who is still in China

Woelfle pinged me again from some Internet terminal in China that is as wonky as before, and of course, being behind the Great Firewall, she can't get on LJ. The Chinese seem not to have heard about LJ liking censorship as well now...

So, she still likes it there. Especially the rice brandy is good, although it does start to smell strange while continuing to taste good Something she ate didn't quite agree with her, though, even though she did not elect to eat the ducks' tongues.-
