Music suggestions, anybody?

I just made an intelligent playlist in iTunes consisting of all songs by

  • Apocalyptica
  • HIM
  • Nightwish
  • Within Temptation
  • Blind Guardian
  • Therion
  • Evanescence
  • Trans-Siberian Orchestra

that I have. Along the lines of 'Dark Beauty', 'Morbid Harmonies', 'Melodic Metal' or whatever you may call it. You get the idea? Now suggest to me what names are definitely missing on that list. Who knows, something worth knowing might entirely have passed me by.

Please not to be suggesting either Rasputina or Sonata Arctica, which are both for various reason known but not appreciated. Thank you!

Ordo Equilibrio Rosario or whatever their name is.
And Angeldust.

Gottswilli! I really need a week away from the Postmuggle.
And Angeldust isn't even that much slang. It's the semi official name of that stuff, beside the chemical term.

Personally, I adore Wolfsheim, but you may already know of them.

Good lord! This q. is right up my alley!

I highly suggest Corvus Corax, Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows, and Ataraxia, all dark medieval-oriented and lovely. Others: Merry Thoughts (particularly Pale Empress), E Nomine, Juno Reactor, Magenta, QNTAL, VAST.

Darkwave -- less metal-ish, but very lovely: Arms of Someone New, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, The Cranes, Dead Can Dance, Peter Ulrich, Delerium (sic), Faith and the Muse, HMB, Claire Voyant, Paris By Night, Brenden Perry, This Ascension, This Mortal Coil, VAS.

More EBM or synth but you might still like: Seabound, Agnes Poetry, Behind the Scenes, Bella Morte, Diary of Dreams, Diva Destruction, Fusspills 11, L'ame Immortelle, The Last Dance, London After Midnight, Redemption, Soil and Eclipse, Conjure One.

I can give you more specific song suggestions, if needed. You can also go here and see my playlists, which will include most of my preferred songs by some of these bands.

Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows is similar to Corvus Corax, but a bit more "death rock." I am particularly fond of Dead Lover's Sarabande part 2, namely a song called Hades Pluton.

Ataraxia is a "beautiful voice" kind of band; their song on the Gothic Rock 2 comp is called Canzona, and is stunning. I find their CDs a bit hit or miss, but they are hard to find in the U.S., so that might be my problem.

Merry Thoughts are a classic-style gothic-rock band, but I like them a lot. The song Pale Empress may have especial meaning to a German, or maybe I read too much into it (Our country is a land of tumbling walls!), but it’s one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard...

E Nomine is a bombastic German sample-fest; they are equal parts trance-techno and over the top gothic/industrial dance music. Mitternacht is their big hit.

Juno Reactor is also tecno-ish, as well, but their cover of God is God is a great example of gothic bellydance club fare.

Magenta -- I don't know a lot about this band, but their song One Mind is very nice, and the album Periode is good.

VAST is a kind of an experimental group, and stands for Visual Audio Sensory Theater. The song Touched is a popular one, using middle eastern melodies and more traditional rock.

Arms of Someone New is a darkwave band from the C'est La Mort label. Actually, almost anything from that label is worth checking out, including the Judgment of Paris, Area, Eden, Handful of Snowdrops, C-Cat Trance, and Tel Basta. Many of these are unavailable anymore, but some have been re-issued by the label, Projekt.

Black Tape for a Blue Girl is the band of the 2 owners of Projekt., and has been around for YEARS. Impressive flute and sad vocals.

The Cranes are a sort of Cocteau Twins wannabee band. Beautiful Friend is a good entry song.

Dead Can Dance is one of the most well-known of what I like to call the ethnogoths. They combine instruments and singing styles from all over the world, and put out some really amazing music. The live album Toward the Within is a good CD to start with; normally I loathe live albums, but this is one exception.

See also Brenden Perry and Lisa Gerard, the two members of the band who also have bodies of solo work.

Also check out Peter Ulrich, a percussionist for DCD. Projekt label; I suggest Taquhara's Leaving.

Delerium (sic) and Conjure One are two of a series of nearly indistinguishable bands involving Bill Leeb and / or Rhys Fulber. Check out the Karma album by Delerium, especially Koran, Silence, and Firefly.

Center of the Sun from Conjure One's self-titled album is that band's most popular song; their second album is very different and not really worth checking out.

For some reason, the song Providence was released as Front Line Assembly, instead of Delerium, but you should look for it as well; the rest of FLA is Skinny-Puppy-esque danceclub industrial. All these songs share beautiful vocals and a dark dancefloor beauty.
