Slightly off-toppish: I just wanted to add that the Hornblower books have a fair amount of slash too. But those were written a bit later that 'Fit for Rome' me thinks.

Yep; the first was published in 1937.

From the Hornblower novels/TV-series/what have you, there is a certain Archie in Milliways. He's by now married to Svava -- not Svava the cat, of course, but Svava the Valkyrie after whom I re-named the cat commonly and unimaginatively known as Smokey.-
