The promised picture post -- Kaltenberg 2008

For reference -- the pictures from 2006 and 2007. The pictures have been taken by both the Nazgul and me; I mixed them randomly. One of the pictures is Not Safe For Work!!

1 -- Our costumes, and the market

This is me, on the train to Kaltenberg -- still wearing the red cap which later turned out to be very uncomfortable and brain-restricting!

Clare and Gemma on the train, looking forwards to the middle ages

The Nazgul on the train. She was definitely not a nun this year -- but the drunk bloke on the way back still thought she was.-

Clare and me looking at eating knives -- we didn't buy one, though.

At one stall at the market, somebody had cute ferrets. Note the non-period nails!

Clare petting the ferret -- I find she looks a bit like Cate Blanchett from this angle.

And then there was a yurt!

It looked roomy and comfortable

Full of rugs and furs -- note the double-headed battle axe in the back!

We spontaneously found we want one for next year as well -- dunno where one can rent yurts, though.-

Strange little sexual woodcarvings...

The ladies looking at some barbarians.

The stall that sold weapons -- there were some axes, but none nearly as nice as the Danish one I'd seen at the medieval Christmas market, so I didn't buy one now. Better wait for next December.-

Some of the patrons in the bathhouse tavern

The barmaid of the bathhouse tavern, doing something, erm, barmaidy?

Me outside the bathhouse tavern; I had shed the red hat thing and freed my poor brain.

Clare and Gemma daintily eating their meat in perfect period manners.

2 -- The parade

A strong man and some noble maidens.

Some Germanic warriors cautiously doing their shield wall thing, followed by their women.

Some blokes dressed up as dragons.

The obligatory 'Here come Corvus Corax!' shot.

Some Templars leading some poor mundane in a pillory. My Inner!Teja doesn't approve of Templars at all.--

Tin cans with little chain mail miniskirts. I find chain mail miniskirts rather ridiculous, even on this icon.

The bloke with the little pipe sat at our table beside us before the parade started. The bathhouse tavern is that sort of place!

3 -- The rainstorm, and the show

And then there was RAIN! And hailstones! And some of the people that paraded in the arena had huge garden umbrellas. We were wet through before we got some of those grey rain capes as well.

But when the show started, the rain itself was over. Here is one black knight in a puddle. Sorry for the random beer-selling bloke in the foreground!

One of the few pictures the Nazgul got where the horse and rider were clear, instead of the background.

Knights presenting themselves before the jousting itself.

As I said, we were wet through. Clare was starting to get really cold, so we went to look for a warm place; and the warmest place in the whole area was of course the bathhouse itself! Clare took off her dress and put it on the oven, and stood in front of the oven in her camisia, the renaissance shift she was wearing under her dress. She was a very pathetic picture -- the long sleeves coming down to her knees, same as her sleeves. She stood there, dripped, and slowly dry. Gemma and the Nazgul went about to get warming alcoholic drinks, and I helped -- with turning over the drying clothes, and scrubbing the back of one of the bathhouse patrons, as a kind of toll for using the bathhouse at all. And when everything was dry, and Clare was warm again, we went back to the forge to watch iron being worked in the dark.

4 -- The forge

Forge products -- arrow heads, spear heads, a knife, some sort of long pin...

The forge by daylight! Note the blokes standing in the background, with his hands on some sort of beam? He is pulling the bellows! That's what I mean in Milliways when I mention 'pulling bellows'.

The forge, busy.-

Nice collection of hammers; all very tidy and ready to be used. Note the drinking vessel ready beside them -- forge work is thirsty work!

Fiery fire, by daylight.

And now, fiery fire by night, after our stay at the the bathhouse.

The smith, hammering. I noticed that every six or seven beats, he hit the anvil, not the piece he was  on. I wondered what that was about, and Clare suggested that the hammer was sliding in his hand as he needed to hold it loosely, and he was adjusting it with the hit on the anvil.

Much of forgework is waiting, it seems. This bloke seems to be used to it.

The bellows-puller looks especially merry tonight.

Hammering.-

5 -- Random things from the other days the ladies were here

A teeny tiny froglet we found on Thursday, in Nymphenburg park, sitting in Clare's hand.

Clare and Gemma having huge drinks in the Hard Rock Café on Saturday. Later, we did a cracky EP in Milliways, as is customary.-

Gemma and Clare trying on dirndl dresses today, at C&A. Gemma has a thing for purple as well, so of course she tried on a purple one.

The yert looks like how I imagine the Cheysuli tents to be, with the furs all over the floors. Big and comfortable.

So many unflattering photographs of me. . . alas!

Ha Ha! There are some lovely pictures of the long weekend here (shame about the expression on my face in the dirndl pic!).
Thankyou again so much for your hospitality, you'll have to come visit Brighton too when you get over to England.

Okay, I NEED to go to Germany. Wirklich!

The wooden carvings are beautiful. They look like they might have had a little Asian sculptural influence.

I saw Mongol yesterday. The yurt makes me think of that.
