Mad Men 4.02 -- running commentary

Now the Little Lady is gone, and I have slept, I can finally watch last Sunday's TV!

  • Glen the incipient creep is back! And he goes for Sallie now, who behaves exactly like a mini-Betty. I think this is the first time the kids got dialogue all by themselves with no grown-up present, too.
  • Don is doing his own typing? I didn't know men in his position did, at all, back then. Unless they actually wrote copy, but an exec like him no longer would?
  • Eeeep Freddy the drunk -- is business really booming so much they need to hire him??
  • Why is Don tempting him with drink on purpose? Not even taking a hint from Roger? He wants the account, but Freddy in the gutter?
  • Ahhhh the beginnings of modern market research. With lots of things that are acutely painful for some of the people present.
  • Joan is really no longer just office manager if she's on that panel.
  • Yep they are stealing Freddy's client. Why?
  • Heeee Pryce sounds like my she-boss. She keeps the overhead down at my slavery nagging just like that.
  • Heeeee somebody speechifying against Medicare back on the cusp of 1965...
  • What the FUCK are Glen and that other boy doing????
  • Why do they still think Lee Garner jr. wants girls? After all, he got Sal fired for, erm, not doing what he wanted. Well, perhaps he's some kind of omnivore?
  • This is the woman to give Don the kind of intellectual challenge he likes in his flings! Totally ahead of her time, in style, work, attitude, methodology...
  • The younger staff think Don pathetic, the way he drinks and doesn't eat and is all emo...
  • And now he goes and bones his own secretary or what?? WTF is that man thinking? WTF is that man thinking with??
  • He lives on drink, cigarettes, sex, and emo feelings.
  • Freddy, however, seems to be stealing Peggy's office (after she got his after he was fired from old Sterling Cooper).
  • She seriously hoped to be the next Jane? Come on, you poor deluded thing...

We've seen Don typing a few times before, though not very often. Maybe he had an idea that grabbed him, and a typewriter was handier than a notepad? (Unlikely, but you never know.)

I don't think Don was deliberately trying to get Freddy drunk, he was just being very, VERY clueless. Paraphrased from somewhere: When Roger is the voice of drinking in moderation, you know you're in trouble. And Roger himself was doing some pretty hard-core slurring later on.

If someone walked out on a presentation I'd worked hard on, I'd be pissed off and want to know the reason too. Especially if it was one of the top executives, for whom I'd particularly sweated to get it right. I was surprised so many fans seemed to think Faye was making a play for Don. I didn't get that vibe at all.
