On watching 'Shame'

  • Does every American with an appartment keep a baseball bat around to hit intruders with?
  • Watching him go running is actually the visually most interesting bit yet.
  • It does the same non-moving camera thing at times that 'Archipelago' does, but not quite as obnoxiously..
  • Oh dear, cocaine. How cliché: ad exec => snorts cocaine. Nobody does that where I work!
  • Is there a reason they are mostly wearing grey? Is grey the new black, or at least was it at the time?
  • And then, suddenly, everything is meaningfully red...

The point of the movie, Maru, was that our sex-saturated culture is making us incapable of intimacy. I thought the most agonizing scene in the movie was where he sits writhing at the table while Sissy sings "NY NY".

And, yeah, coke is HUGE in the exec circles here. My 36-year-old neighbor committed suicide a few years back and the truth came out -- he was essentially bankrupt from his addiction. They even sell it to elementary school kids across the street. We know who they are (not trying to be racist here) because two out-of- the area guys in an expensive SUV with a cell phone in the parking lot are up to no good.
