And one for [livejournal.com profile] cob_web as well

[livejournal.com profile] cob_web guessed right as well as to what interests I took from her list, and so she gets a drabble as well. She wanted a happy drabble, and left the rest to me. It turned into a happy drabble about a character supposed to be unhappy.

Unhappy Childhood

Unhappy childhoods are sometimes overrated. Don't get me wrong, there are some that are so overshadowed by grown-up monstrosities that even the most innocent memories will be tainted in hindsight.

This wasn't one of them.

Rumours about unhappiness had whispered past little Ty's ears forever. Something was supposed to be wrong with him. He didn't have a hostling, like the other harlings had. That was supposed to be bad, and a cause of unhappiness. But life had its recompenses.

Like the garden. None of the other harlings had such a wonderful garden to play in. There was a pond even, that some called a lake, and a run-down garden house, and such trees to climb! And such creatures to catch, and such flowers to pluck, and such miraculous, shiny stones to collect. There were pigeons that would answer him if he called to them in their language, and there were bumble-bees that were lazy and fluffy and not really dangerous. There were the fruit trees he was supposed to leave alone, but didn't; cherries and apples and plums, his for the taking if he was willing to brave Bryony's scolding.

And then there were the nights, the hooting, low-flying dark creatures, and the swooping bats on the hunt, and the cozy spookiness of a familiar place turned even more magical by moonlight.

And all this was his, his alone, as Swift was far too big now and had gone away to be a real hero instead of chasing Ty around the garden.

And when he was tired of his private realm, there was always somebody to bring his treasures and discoveries to, excitedly calling up the staircase, "Look what I've found, Cobweb!"

The offer is still open - get them while they're hot! The longer it takes, the more likely I am to forget which I took from whom.

yay!
