Yesterday, the Metropolitans' big black dog died. He'd had cancer of the prostate since the end of last year, and had been quite ill since Easter.

Last week, while he was already getting worse, I went to visit him almost every day, but not yesterday, as I was rather late coming back from work; but that would already have been too late anyway.
Today, I went down into the cellar to borrow a set of fine screwdrivers, and there was no dog any more, and his collar lay empty in a corner...
