*blink* But there are. Beorn in The Hobbit is the one that comes most immediately to my mind. It's true it's harder to think of named, literary werebears, but I suspect wherever there are bears, there are legends about humans who can turn into bears and vice versa.
In the Anita books, the fourth one, Lunatic Cafe, as a family of them. In the Belgariad and Mallorian, turning into a bear runs in the males of one family, can't remember his name. North American mythology have them. Uuuh *thinks* Am sure there are more.
Hmmm, I do have LC; it's among the Anita Blake books Sal sent me when she was getting rid of hers. I should read it after all, and app a were-bear. Last night, the impulse to do so suddenly struck me. I was talking black bears and grizzlies with Saph, and suddenly imagined a were-bear ambling through the woods in Milliways...
It is autumn here. My bear-like hibernation instincts come to the fore, and I want a were-bear. Let's see if the impulse is still there at the beginning of the next app cycle.
Your icon is majorly cute!! I do love bears, have done so all my life.
What is that with ancient loves I always had coming to the fore in autumn and turning into Milli!apps??
**shakes head at self**
And now, I must run to work! Lots of stuff to do and customers to snark at -- autumn is catalogue season at work, and I think some of the stress/excess energy turns into pup-spawning impulses. I know I got Teja because of that, two autumns ago. And last year, I started thinking about Ma'at around this time.-
I think no female were may shift easily while pregnant, which is why they keep losing their babies if they are trying to have them. At least the shifters whose shifts are triggered by the moon.
This one? It's about a part in 'Narcissus in Chains' that I particularly disliked, when the action was interrupted rudely not by the more usual sex, but several pages of description of how Jean-Claude had redecorated his sitting room.
Well, then they don't shift while they are pregnant, and do have kids, hence the 'family of them' you mention. Now I really must look into them...
I actually meant (but didn't say, as I am...out of it), that in one of the games I've been in, the baby shifters would shift with their mother while in utero. Which I liked. I get very, very bored by the whole 'female werethings cannot have children' thing.
...I don't remember that bit. Then again, I've mostly blocked out that book.

But there was a mama bear. Older, but still.

And, aside from that, I was wondering about Kaspar's skin in that manner as well, in the context of that canon.
Actually, I find it fascinating what people took my shout-out to mean...
