This is an absolutely seminal article about different styles of creativity on Wired News.

If you have anything to do with creative processes above and beyond absorbing canon others created, this is very likely to be just as fascinating for you.

Some creative people start out very early, everything ready in their mind; some experiment for years until they get out what is brewing in them. Also, note that it's not supposed to be a duality, but spikes on a continuum - we all know that as well, if we observe ourselves and others creating.

This would all be of mere theoretical interest, but it's actually important that we understand different creative processes - not our own, but those of the people we work with. Write with. Code with. Play with.

You know, they're so exasperating not because they're stupid, unorganised, over-emotional, painfully unspontaneous, random, bossy or obsessive. They just work according to a different creative style.

In past ages, creative people either worked alone or in small congenial and/or well-organised RL teams - think a rennaissance painters' workshop, a rock band, or a group of Montmartre artist as in 'Moulin Rouge'? Now, cooperation of equals is becoming more important; we create in distributed, collaborative, virtual and world-wide Open Source networks - from RPGs to the beta system in fiction writing to coding free software. And when different creative styles crash, what happens is commonly known as 'wank'* - because we're all creative and original persons, no matter how different our styles.

If we take the difference into account, we can collaborate much better and produce better output with less heartache.

Hence: go read!!
