More and more, the entries on my f-list are f-locked; I need to log in as myself to see what is going on. Even I have been known to post entries f-locked to my "Dyskworlders" friends' group when I didn't want to spam everybody with discworld_rpg related stuff, or was being sentimental, or both.

But somehow, everybody has lately started doing that. I know about some people, but generally I wonder whether that is just something goiong around memtically, like a mental cold, or what people really are afraid of.

Also, there is that one point where the concept of "private tags" we're using at the Discworld RPG is superior to the actual f-locking: there, you can take not only whole posts, but also comments and even parts of comments private and hide them from all the other characters (while the muns read on all the more avidly). On actual LJ, I need to know somebody's email address and mail them.

In general, the main time I friends-lock my entires is because I have set up a filter to keep Caleb and Daniel out. Thus if I am complaining about Caleb or talking about what I got him for Christmas, he is filtered out. Almost no other entries are locked.

it's bloody exclusivity, that's what it is. most my friends have it and they don't even enable me to link my other friends to their discussions. they are not afraid of anything, it's just snobbery or rather - they know all the people they want to know. i find it weirdest when they have twice as many friends as they friended, since that means their journal cannot be actually read by all those nonfriended people.

i can't even rant properly. they are doing it more and more. grrr.
and as i will have to ask in the other comment as well, what are muns. moderatingmums?

Personally, I never use f-lock. If there's something that I don't want the world in general to know, I just, er, don't put it up on the Internet.

Hmm. I notice the phenomenon too.

I have been locking a precious few posts, and while I'm always slightly paranoid anyway that RL people whom I don't want to will read my LJ, I try to ignore that threat and post away freely. Whenever I want to be sure I want to keep it away from them, I'll lock. Or sometimes, when I want to pass along a private message to one special person.

How doeas this pricatising of comments work? It would definitely come in handy because sometimes you get private in comments to a post you'd still like to stay public..

I only have f-lists for the purposes of viewing my flists, not really for posting. (I friend many many people.) Though I did for a short while have some things f-locked because I'd just, er, broken up with my boyfriend and it felt strange to kind of... carry on with things when I knew he was hurting. Or something. Blah.

Sometimes the un-flist is a hostile environment. Case in point, a certain small bunch of RL people have some sort of dramatic vendetta thing going against my journal. Or did; everyone oughtta be simmering down three weeks post-facto so that I can unlock everything again.

I hate hate hate having to lock my entries. It bothers me. I wish Strikes/Private-tags worked as they do on the RP; that would make things easier.

I've noticed that I'm one of the strange people who rarely f-locks anything. I used to always f-lock angst posts, but I've grown out of the habit of using LJ to rant.

On the other hand, I'm a big user of private entries. I'll post notes to myself, links, or even scraps of html/quiz results that I'm collecting for my next big quiz post. I've even got a big to-do-list post dated October 10, 2010. :D
