Who to app next in Milliways?

I feel the strong need to get myself a consistently playable female character that kicks some ass. Madame Thénardier from Les Mis isn't really doing anything, and I'd like to replace her with somebody a bit more interactive.

So, likely candidates (despite misgivings and doubts about each of them, but that is the usual thing with me):
  • Dot from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (even though i only get the first season yet on Netflix here)
  • Magdalena Kuisl, the Hangman's Daughter (here I am with yet another charrie from a historical novel written in German)
  • Alex Vause from Orange is the New Black (which I am getting hooked on now I have Netflix -- but can I do her American-ness justice?)

So, anybody from Milliways who sees this -- any preferences due to your own charries and plots and fandom favourites?

DOOM!!

I found a Silmarillion fanfic by accident that it infinitely brilliant -- an apocalyptic thriller about Elves in modern times! It pitches the two most Doomed families of Tolkien's canon against each other -- at least so far, perhaps they learn to cooperate eventually. Amrod and Túrin managed at least one sensible conversation already, at this point.

At The End of All Things (44054 words) by lintamande
Chapters: 16/?
Fandom: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien, TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: Túrin Turambar, Niënor Níniel, Urwen Lalaith, Morwen Eledhwen, Húrin Thalion, Celegorm, Fëanor, Maedhros, Maglor, Curufin, Caranthir, Amrod, Amras
Additional Tags: Elves in modern Earth, Political Thriller, apocalyptic fantasy, Suicide Attempt, dagor dagorath
Summary:

A drilling rig off the coast of Norway breaks down under mysterious circumstances. A petroleum engineer in North Dakota gets called off a major discovery because there's trouble back at home. It's the Dagor Dagorath, as apocalyptic fiction set in modern Earth starring the reborn Children of Húrin, and anything else I say would be a pretty major spoiler.

My additional blurb for this is slightly spoilerish the way blurb for for-pay books usually is )

All the Christmas movies!

Through Twitter, one of my oldest online friends contacted me today, a bloke with whom I used to run Star Trek games on Compuserve back in the mid to late nineties. I'd googled his name some time ago and found that twitter account and sent him a tweet going 'I might know you -- does the name Baroonuk ring a bell with you?' (that was our most successful ship, manned by Federation and Cardassians far away in a galaxy full of insectoids and other interesting aliens), and today, he pinged me back there, and yep, it's him.

Back in the day, when my rather naive younger cousin went to the US to see some family and then insisted on going to New York all by herself, I asked him to meet her just so somebody would keep an eye on her from far away; they went to the top of the World Trade Center, if I recall correctly. That's how long ago it was.

Wow.

Also, it reminded me of how my main character on that ship, a Cardassian doctor names Sekla, actually specialised in psychological damage, so I do sense a pattern here...

Yay Hobbit the first: my friend the Nazgul animated the trailer for 'Battle of Five Armies' in virtual Lego, as a proof of concept/portfolio piece. You can see it here:

Yay Hobbit the second: we just found out that we get the movie a week earlier than the US!!

PSA: How to revert back to Gtalk

Because I was fed up, I googled "hangouts sucks want old google talk client back", and the first answer it gave me had a link to the direct download path for GTalk as I have been loving and using it for years.

So, deactivate hangouts in Chrome, close and/or restart Chrome, then install that! Works even under Windows 8 and will enable me to chat with my most immediate Millifolken and the Nazgul while still not being on AIM for general conversations.-

This has been a public service announcement.-

Oxarárfoss and Game of Thrones

Last night in chat I mentioned Oxarárfoss in Iceland, and how some scene in the 4th season of 'Game of Thrones' were shot there? It is known they were there when we were because in some making-of interview about the locations in Iceland they mentioned having had the best, nicest weather in Icelandic memory, and that started just shortly before we came. I am pretty sure that especially the approach to the Eyrie is Oxarárfoss.

In actual history, the waterfall was created by the Viking settlers at some stage in the 10th century to bring water to the assembly grounds of Þingvellir, where the entire country met to democratically (sort of) make policy.

On to the pictures! )

Hot!!

For the first time since setting up my main laptop computer with Windows 8 in early January, I'm running it on the external cooler -- all of a sudden, it's turned from 'cold as a witches' titty' to 'too fucking hot'. Within about three days.

My sister put an hour-long edit of her slide show with pictures from our vacation last summer up on YouTube -- with panning, zooming, animation, music, the works. Enjoy!

Les Misérables 1995 French version -- running commentary

Now embarking on the adventure of watching the French 1995 version of Les Mis with Belmondo -- from what I have read, set apart by the fact it uses a framing device set in 1942 to stress the point of 'Why is the classical novel Les Misérables still relevant for us today?' Oh what a happy age -- nobody in 2013 or 2014 questions why Les Mis is still relevant. Globalisation, the raging neo-con and neo-liberal ideologies as well as the global economic crash they caused, and in consequence the movements trying to defend us against all this, like Anonymous and Occupy, have brought us right back to the barricade, and to the despair and poverty surrounding it. The book's opening motto is as painfully current as ever. Les Mis needs no justification for us today.

No, the most adventurous part for me is that it's entirely in French -- and there's not even closed captioning to support my far-less-than-perfect auditory comprehension of the language. I know the story, yes, but getting through the framing device and putting together who is who in 1942 and in 1832 (and before) will take some concentration.

On to the bullet points! )

New old computer

My computer, which I have had for three years, now runs Windows 8, is much faster, has lost all the OEM gunk, and is fun. iTunes works as well, I have to see whether paint.net is enough or whether I need to get PaintshopPro back, and GTalk runs in Pidgin which the old setu refused to do.

What I am missing is all the fonts; but I do have them on my previous computer, so when I get that out in order to screenshot the Malko!Vert version of Les Mis for the Thénardiers, I'll get my fonts from there. I cannot possible live without Gill Sans!!
